Electric fish were again reported millennia later by ancient Greek, Roman and Arabic naturalists and physicians. Several ancient writers, such as Pliny the Elder and Scribonius Largus, attested to the numbing effect of electric shocks delivered by catfish and torpedo rays, and knew that such shocks could travel along conducting objects. Patients suffering from ailments such as gout or headache were directed to touch electric fish in the hope that the powerful jolt might cure them. Possibly the earliest and nearest approach to the discovery of the identity of lightning, and electricity from any other source, is to be attributed to the Arabs, who before the 15th century had the Arabic word for lightning (raad) applied to the electric ray. Ancient cultures around the Mediterranean knew that certain objects, such as rods of amber, could be rubbed with cats fur to attract light objects like feathers. Thales of Miletos made a series of observations on static electricity around 600 BC, from which he believed that friction rendered amber magnetic, in contrast to minerals such as magnetite, which needed no rubbing. Thales was incorrect in believing the attraction was due to a magnetic effect, but later science would prove a link between magnetism and electricity. 200 Million Thousand by Black Lips free essay sample

For a band whose endlessly immature and amusing antics include on-stage urination, nudity and guitar-burning, a mob of blathering, flannel-clad devotees is pretty much guaranteed. When said band has talent to boot, well, then you’ve got Atlanta’s Black Lips, self-described â€Å"flower punks† and sleaze gods of neo-garage. Where so many artists get lost in the ‘00s’ tidal wave of garage revivalists, Black Lips do their best to stand out – they, for the most part, sound sloppier, truer, and despite their grubby sound, tighter than their fellow revivalists. In just under an hour of fun, discordant debauchery, Black Lips’ fifth studio album, 200 Million Thousand, rips through fifty years of trashy, cacophonic lo-fi bliss, a brilliant blend of cheap beer and sweaty moshpit dogma. Black Lips’ luster comes from their complete lack thereof – there is absolutely nothing shiny and original about this band, whose fifth album, fortun ately, shows no growth or development from their debut, but rather a hovering sense of grungy familiarity. We will write a custom essay sample on 200 Million Thousand by Black Lips or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page They salute all their 60’s garage-y predecessors – big names like the Kingsmen, the Seeds, and also their plentiful anonymous, greasier counterparts – in their thrown-to-the-gutter, unpolished swagger. For the first time ever, Black Lips record in an actual studio with actual equipment, but not to worry, 200 mIllion Thousand still sounds like it was recorded in a shag-carpeted basement on a flea market 4-track. Like other Vice Records protegees, Black Lips music is twisted, ironic, and undoubtedly delivered with an ever-present sneer. â€Å"Drugs† sums up the Black Lips way of life, a scuzzily upbeat surf-rock anthem about wasted youth doing dirty stuff in â€Å"dirty backseats†. Their cover of Iggy Pop’s pre-Stooges band, the Iguanas’, â€Å"Again and Again† is another nice touch, especially considering Black Lips’ Iggy-ish sound on freaked-out tracks like â€Å"Trapped in a Basement†. On â€Å"Let it Grow†, vocals are sung in an almost inhuman wail, but it is saved by its supreme catchiness. Though they hide it with layers of fuzz, grime and atonality, Black Lips can create some mean clean hooks and craft songs pretty as their antics are ugly. Black Lips do not for a moment sound tender. They have song names like â€Å"Big Black Baby Jesus of Today† and their harmonies, surely, are created solely to induce winces. They approach softness on â€Å"Starting over†, which starts as a slow, almost poignant jangle, but when vocalist Cole Alexander chimes in with his signature tuneless slur, it’s clear â€Å"starting over† hes not. He and his band of merry slackers will in all likelihood continue to make the same, great album for years to come, and glorious it shall be.

Safety is the Right of Every Individual Essay Example Essay Example

Safety is the Right of Every Individual Essay Example Paper Safety is the Right of Every Individual Essay Introduction Tutor: Safety is the Right of Every Individual Essay Body Paragraphs Safety is the Right of Every Individual Being safe from external aggression is a fundamental right to every living human being. This right is enshrined in some of the most powerful global legislation like the universal bill of rights. The duty to provide safety lies with the individual and other organizations like the state, local authorities and learning institutions (Louis 20-35). Everybody has a duty of ensuring their safety wherever they go, however, individual responsibility can only go so far. The broader concept about security is bestowed upon the other bodies. Bodies like the government and universities have a broader mandate to guarantee the security of their members. The university should bear additional accountability in protecting its students because it is socially obliged and because the learners are a university’s main concern. The safety of USF students or any other student for that matter is paramount. It ought to be a top priority for the learning institution as a daily routine. Students are particularly vulnerable to crime, and it is imperative that learning institutions take elaborate measures to ensure students are safe both inside and outside school. For instance, in the case of USF, the university transport system that has been tasked with shuttling students inside and outside the university starts its services at 7 am and runs until 12 am. Unfortunately, some of the hardworking students extend their stay past midnight. These learners are left with no alternative other than to walk home. Walking home in the wee hours is dangerous, particularly to men, as the possibility of falling victim to crime is exceptionally high (Criss Pamela 14-18). Statistics show that men are more likely to fall victim to violent crimes than women are (Victims and Victimization). To paraphrase the importance of enhancing safety for students, it would be crucial to analyze the current university security policy and the surrounding environment. The security personnel are only stationed at the university main compound. According to media reports, the area around USF has recorded astronomical figures in reported criminal activity. The economic status of most of the student does not help the situation. Some of the learners cannot afford cars while the ones who own cars find the parking fees to be exorbitant. Commuting to and from the school by taxi is a nightmare for those who live far because of the high fares. These challenges have forced the students to find residences near the campus. The university has a social responsibility to guarantee safety of its students so that they can undertake their studies without worrying about their safety (Bettinghaus Erwin 36-39). In light of this issue, I can propose a number of security measures that can be adopted by the student body and the university management. The university’s transport service can be extended to a twenty-four hour service. Such a move will ensure all students reach th eir destination safely and at all times. It is true that such a service will come at an extra cost. Therefore, learners should be ready and willing to chip-in with contributions to meet the added cost of service. Institutions should also guarantee the safety of learners who have left their parents’ homes to reside closer to the university. The university assumes the role of looking after the welfare of the students until they get back to their parents. Therefore, USF should lobby the national government and the local authority to increase security personnel and patrols in the entire area where learners reside. Increasing the number of security personnel in such areas would significantly decrease the likelihood of learners falling victim to crime. Some pundits may argue that it is not the prerogative of the university to offer security to students especially when they are out of the university compound. They may argue that the university bears that responsibility only when the student is within the university premises (Criss Pamela 14-18). It would be neglectful of the USF to have such an attitude. As I mentioned earlier, the university has a social responsibility to the community and its customers. The customers happen to be its students. Moreover, in order to protect its reputation, the university will do itself a veritable favor by ensuring its members are safe. Another argument against such an obligation would be based on cost of providing the service. Making the transport service run for twenty-four hours would not necessarily come at a cost as the service is only absent for seven hours. Besides, the university can convince the student to bear the extra cost of providing the transport service. The Bull Runner (USF’s campus shuttling service) currently operates between 7:00 am and 12:00 pm between Monday and Thursday. On Friday, the hours are shorter with the services ending at 5:30 P.M. The weekend service only lasts for five hours (between 2:30 P.M. and 5:30 P.M.) and there is no service on public holidays. The weekday service should be extended to twenty-four hours between Monday and Thursday with the Friday service being extended to midnight. The service can charge extra for the later hours in order to recover the cost of service. Extending these hours will make sure that these shuttle services are available for all students, including those who study very late and those who have avid social lives. If the university opts to lobby for increased security from the national government or local authority, there will be no extra cost that the university will incur as such cost will be borne by the relevant organ. There are numerous advantages of having a secure environment. The academic performance of the students will improve tremendously. The student will be able to excel in their studies and possibly come up with excellent inventions. The staff will also be able to work well, and their output will increase. The communi ty around the university will also enjoy the benefits of enhanced security measures. Another solution for the issue of campus security could be to introduce an application that tracks student movement. The application could be developed by students and data can be hosted in the server, in the university police department. When a user installs the application on their phone, they can allow a computer to track their movement and create a log that details the location visited and times of arrival and departure. When a user signs into the app, they are prompted to enter their current location and their final destination. A computer in the university police department then tracks the user and makes sure that they get to their destination safely. The app can also be used to send alerts that warn users of any threats to security. A good and secure environment can be used as a marketing tool for the university. It has the potential to attract more and more clients as the current students ac t as ambassadors of the university (Stiff James 45-52). When they enjoy a secure college environment, they will disseminate that information to their peers at home and encourage them to join their university. Benefits of security will trickle down even to the local residents and business community, as many investors will be willing to open up venture in the region. Statistics released in 2010 showed that USF has a high rate of burglaries and car thefts (over three years 403 burglaries and 101 car thefts were recorded) (Merrefield and Streib). The campus ranked 127 out of 450 in security, showing that there is a lot of room for improvement. The duty to provide safety lies with the individual and other bodies such as the state, local authorities and learning institution. In this respect, both the individual and other bodies have a role to play in order to realize security as a right to all. The learners need to take responsibility for their safety such as ensuring they do not walk al one late at night, or engage in activities that might jeopardize their safety. There should be a concerted effort by the entire student fraternity aimed at encouraging the university to enhance student safety. USF has the greatest responsibility of ensuring its students are safe. Only marginal effort is required of the university in enhancing the current security policy in relation to the student body. The university is only called upon to make the current transport service a twenty-four hours service, as this will ensure those students who leave the university premises very late at night reach their destination safe and secure. The university can also use its influence and convince the national government as well as the local authority to increase the number of security personnel and patrols. service and products Essay

service and products Essay service and products Essay Car dealerships and cars are the selected services and products for identifying process design approaches. There are three contrasting approaches for service and they are: self-service, product line approach, and the personal attention approach (Larson & Gray, 2006).†¨ Product Line Approach within a car dealership deals with the efficiency of production services. In this approach, the company controls the execution of each outlet in order to ensure rapid financing and or purchasing of a quality safe service. (Chase, et al. 2006). This approach will be helpful for car dealerships because through this the company will be able to deliver good quality services to the customers. †¨ Self-service Approach: This approach includes customers in the production of services to help enhanced the efficiency of services. This design approach will also be supportive for the customers because it allow one to have input on how car dealerships handle issues in the office and online. Car dealerships deal with customers that say they are just looking versus if they really want to purchase a car, financing, and paperwork issues. People now a days go to the internet first. A down side to visiting a show room is because 88% of customers said they received a lousy presentation and demonstration, and 85% of consumers say their salesperson did not control the sales process or build any rapport or interviewed their sales person. (Dealers Refresh, 2015). Customers that use the self- service approach are mostly the customers that are on line and this does help dealerships focus on the delivery of effective and efficient services in shorter period of time. The personal Attention Approach emphasizes the development of a relationship between customers and the sales person to ensure effective customer services. â€Å"According to Dealer Refresh, 78% of customers that visit a showroom buy a vehicle, 38% of customers purchase a car within 4 hours of visiting their first dealership. (Dealer Refresh, 2015). The use of this approach helps build support and loyalty from the company and the customer. Just like services a product has its own design processes for management and they are: job shop, batch production, assembly line and continuous flow. In the Job shop process task to be completed are handle either by a group of workers or a single worker.†¨In batch production the

Quality Management Tools & Techniques Assignment - 1

Quality Management Tools & Techniques - Assignment Example By visually observing the histogram, it is possible to determine whether or not the process is in control. In this paper, the capability analysis for individual variables is applied using Minitab. This analysis yields a process capability report even when the data for the variables are not normally distributed. In this case, the manufacturing process produces a single hard drive using three distinct processes, hence the application of this method is suitable in order to evaluate each process independently. As such, histograms of the data for each process will be generated, which will help to verify whether or not the processes are in control. In this case, three main measures will be used to evaluate the capabilities of the three processes including Cp, Cpk and PPM. The measure Cp is an index that measures potential capability of a process; that is, the capability of a process in meeting certain conditions. For a capable process, Cp should be greater than one. The measure Cpk, on the other hand, is a measure of whether or not the process is conforming to the required specifications (Bass, 2007). For a perfectly centered process, Cpk should be equal to Cp. The measure PPM (parts per million) represents the number of defectives in every one million parts manufactured. By visually observing figure 1, the data is not normally distributed. Indeed, the data seems to be both bimodal and right-skewed. However, the data values are within the specified limits. The value of Cp = 1.41 is greater than one, which indicates that the process is capable. Additionally, the value of Cpk = 1.30 is almost equal to that of Cp hence the process is centered. On the overall performance, for every one million hard drives produced by the manufacturer, 18.29 parts will exceed the specified limits on the lower specification limit (LSL) side while 238.83 parts will exceed the limit on the upper

Knowledgement Management Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Knowledgement Management - Research Paper Example 1). The meaning of the term knowledge was qualified by Baker, Baker, Thorne, & Dutnell (1997), â€Å"knowledge is present in ideas, judgments, talents, root causes, relationships, perspectives and concepts. Knowledge can be related to customers, products, processes, culture, skills, experiences and know-how† (cited in Kalpic & Bernus, 2006, p. 44). KM is therefore important to the success of the organization because through the collective shared efforts of various stakeholders, the potentials and resources of the organizations are maximized. Core competencies and strengths are capitalized to enable the organization to address risks, threats and changes in external environmental factors that would impinge on the firm’s operations. Accordingly, not only are the organizational objectives achieved; but more so, the relevant contribution of the organization’s stakeholders are thereby percieved as instrumental for the firm’s success and therefore, make each cont ributor better motivated to share their inputs towards a greater good. As noted from Kalpic & Bernus’ (2006) discourse, â€Å"Rouggles (1998), for example, found that the four most common KM projects conducted by organizations were creating/implementing an intranet, knowledge repositories, decision support tools, or groupware to support collaboration† (p. 49). The creation and implementation of an intranet is deemed crucial for organizations to access and connect volumes and diverse information through different departments and functions within the organization. This is an example of KM due to the interplay of inputs, processes and systems that need to be identified, analyzed and connected, as required. Decision-support tools are also examples of KM programs were organizational policies and procedures identify and authorize authorities to decide on significant aspects, alternatives, and options that each personnel, department, or group makes on a daily basis. Moral Challenges Essay Example for Free

Moral Challenges Essay Morality is a highly contested topic in every day life. It can be defined as a thought process of making decisions based on one’s beliefs or desires shaped by one’s culture. A right or wrong moral decision can therefore be said to be a product of culture and law stipulated in a constitution and applied in a certain jurisdiction. In everyday life, we are faced with challenges and situations that require our judgment and actions (Kermerling, 2002). In this paper, I will explore two moral situations in which I believe I made the right and wrong decisions respectively, the parties that were involved, the reasons behind my actions and the consequences that followed my decisions and actions. Lastly, I will identify what actions I will take if faced with the same situation the next time to avoid making wrong decisions. Moral Challenges A Right Moral Decision The decision I made to take responsible leadership role and mitigate the planned students’ strike was one of the most acceptable action I ever made in my life. I was actively involved in a peace mission to contain the strike that was organized by drunken and unruly students in the university. The judgment process was affected after the students took alcohol and caused disorder in the institution (Cima, Tonnaer Hauser, 2009). The peace mission involved the director of the faculty, a lecturer, the student leaders and a few students. The students had issues with a lecturer who had failed to show up in three lectures. While it was right for the students to complain over the absence of the lecturer, it was expected for them to follow the right procedure in addressing the problem. The organizers of the strike came while drunk and tried to convince and force the rest of the students to join them in a demonstration to the administration offices. Some students got tempted and joined the unruly students claiming that the administration has failed to act appropriately to their claims. As the chair person of the students union, I took an initiative and addressed the students and informed them that contrary to the claims of some of them, the issue was being addressed and that the lecturer in question had been summoned and appropriate solution would be arrived at soon. I spoke with wisdom, â€Å"Comrades, we are gathered here to inquire about our rights to have normal and uninterrupted studies. Besides, any missed lecture means waste of time and resources. However, the lecturer in question has been summoned and the decision will be communicated to us in appropriate time. Furthermore, I have called the director of the faculty and informed me that he will be here with us in the next one hour. Therefore, I request all of us to have patience since the issue is being handled wisely by the administration. Thank you! † My speech caused a mixed reaction with minority of them accusing me and the rest of the leaders of being sympathizers and colluding with the administration and not giving students’ interests any priority. They begun singing and chanting and demanded at the top of their voices that, â€Å"we demand that you and all our leaders join us in the fight for our rights†¦ we want to show the lecturer a lesson. † Majority of the students were convinced in my speech and they helped in calming the situation. Later, the faculty director arrived and he addressed us all giving the way forward to the satisfaction of the majority. The main architects of the strike were identified and suspended and others expelled and the university once again realized the tranquility which was important in the learning process. This benefited the administration as it served as a wake up call and they moved with speed to address majority of issues by factoring in student needs. The rest of the students benefitted by continuing with normal learning and all the issues raised were addressed with the lecturer getting a warning A Wrong Moral Situation An incident I remember to have taken a wrong decision involved taking side with my brother to indict our house help. Due to my brother’s recklessness, he had left the car keys in his girlfriend’s house. The girlfriend quietly sneaked in our compound and took off with the car whose keys were forgotten in her house. Unfortunately, the girlfriend was a drug dealer and so used the car to transport hard drugs to her customers. She got spotted by the police although she managed to escape abandoning the car and drugs. After learning that the car was in police station, my father rushed home to interrogate us all before proceeding to the police station to record a statement. On sharing with my brother we called his girlfriend and struck a deal to be silent on the whole issue and put the whole blame on the house help. Although I knew the whole truth that my brother had forgotten the keys at his girlfriend’s house, I argued in defense of my brother. I maintained that it was the house help’s responsibility to take care of everything. My brother after gaining confidence and my support, he made his remark in a family meeting, â€Å"I fail to understand how the car came to be used in drug trafficking. It is evident that the house help has been colluding with drug traffickers. The house help should get sacked with immediate effect. † He talked harshly as he left the sitting room, â€Å"He should provide a succinct explanation in this meeting or else he will do it better at the police. † I felt a push inside my heart that what I was doing was wrong but I convinced myself that I had the obligation of defending my brother no matter what and so I cared less of the consequences to the other party. This is the case that happens with psychopaths (Cima, Tonnaer Hauser, 2009). The houses help felt much threatened and could not raise point to defend himself even when it meant he was not guilty. This led to his sacking letting my brother to go scot-free. My brother’s girlfriend and her gang made their best not to be caught in the scandal as they feared the consequences like imprisonment and fines. But the house help suffered unfairly as he lost his job failing to get paid and getting disturbed with even not knowing what could follow. I regretted of making such decision and I made a promise to myself that in case I got faced with the same problem, I would first remind my brother that it should be his responsibility to be accountable for every action he takes and that the house help has aright to expression and fair treatment. This will serve as an example and a wake up call for him to act appropriately in future. The issue of defending my brother and his girlfriend was not moral as it led to the firing of the house help. I will in future keep morals and make sensible decisions which respect all people regardless to class (Kermerling, 2002). In general, it is important that we make decisions based on our beliefs and moral codes on what is right and wrong. This will help shape our society and make everyone act to appropriately. Right moral decisions have significant benefit in the society. With right moral judgments, justice will be maintained and the offenders will be punished. Wrong moral decisions deprive the society of peace and justice. The poor and the minor groups in our society will always be intimidated as they are powerless. A Separate Peace :: essays research papers

Sitting in my third grade classroom we chattered anxiously, waiting for the spelling quizzes to be passed back. My teacher placed them all facing down on our desks, a rather pointless effort when she was already aware that at any moment the room would burst into havoc with yells of "what did you get?", shouting numbers back and forth, and of course superior comments from the students proud of their marks. I quickly flipped mine over and grinned at the 8/10 scrawled in red marker near the top of the page. "What did you get?" sure enough my friend Jenny thrust me her paper. As I stared down at her 100% sitting aside a bright yellow smiley sticker I felt a familiar twinge of jealousy. From that day on I had a secret goal to achieve higher marks than my friend. I can not remember when this rivalry ended, but I do know that it is normal behavior. Each person feels rivalry or competition to other humans, for the majority of their lifetime. This rivalry greatly affects our ability to understand others, and this eventually results in war, discrimination, and enmity. Children are definitely culprits for acting inhumane to each other with teasing, competition, and often hurtful remarks. Although this is the way children often act, it is in the teenage years realization, along with careful thought and consideration, brings each individual to understand wider prospects of human nature; that people coldly drive ahead for themselves alone. Man’s inhumanity1 to man is a way for people to protect themselves from having pain inflicted on them by fellow humans, and achieving their goals and desires free from interference of others. The concept of man’s inhumanity to man is developed in John Knowles’ novel, A Separate Peace. The primary conflict in this novel centers on the main character, Gene, and his battling of jealousy, paranoia, and inability to understand his relationship with his best friend Phineas. Yet the larger battle of man’s inhumanity to man is portrayed by the backdrop of World War II. Gene Forrester is an average, studious, young man attending Devon school in New Hampshire during the second World War. His roommate at Devon, Phineas (otherwise known as Finny) sends Gene on an unexpected journey of self discovery. Finny represents man in his innocence, a kind of edenic2 Adam. He is very athletic, honest and trusting.

Everybody I am sure has either had some kind of trouble as a teen or been in some kind of trouble as a teen. Well some has been worse than others right. Well mine started off when I was 14. I thought I could do what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it and knew everything. Needless to say it didn’t happen that way. When I was 14 I got into a lot of trouble. I didn’t listen to my mom, I would sneak out the house, and I got into a lot of trouble with the police for fighting a lot, and always skipped school. I never hung out with people that did anything good. The people I hung out with where negative. Well one day I went to school and got into a really bad fight and ended up in a juvenile facility over it. I was there for about a month went to court and the judge put me on probation for 3 years. Well I still thought I could do what I wanted to do. So I still kept doing the same behavior I was doing before then. Needless to say I ended up violating probation when I was 15 and they locked me up. I was in a juvenile facility for 3 months then went to court and they put me in a program for 1 year. Well when I got to the program I thought it was going to be easy. But I ended up finding it was actually very difficult. Well after I got out of my program I decided that was something I had never wanted to experience again. So still to this day, and am 21 now, I have not been back in jail or nothing. I have been abiding by the laws and actually I am doing really well for myself. But before I could realize that’s not the life I wanted to live anymore I had to make a change, and not for anybody but myself. Narrative essay:
